John Hallom of Bradwell, Derbyshire, 1640-1699
John Hallom was born in 1640 in the hamlet of Beristall near Bradwell, Derbyshire. He was the youngest son of George Hallom, a yeoman (landowning farmer). He was one of seven children born to George but one of only three who seemed to survive into adulthood. His brother Martin was born in 1628 and his sister Elizabeth in late 1639/early 1640.
John married an Elizabeth in around 1665, probably at the parish church in Hope, although records for marriages for the period 1663-June 1666 do not exist given the disruption caused by the English Civil War.
John and Elizabeth lived in and around the Bradwell area, where their first known child Alice was born in 1667. At the time of the birth of their next child, Ellis, in 1669, they lived in the hamlet of Coplow Dale south of Bradwell. They went on to have a further three children: George in 1675, Thomas in 1677 and Martin in 1678.
John's wife Elizabeth died in or near Bradwell in 1683 and was buried at Hope parish church on 23 Jan 1683. John outlived her by 16 years, and died in Bradwell in 1699. He was buried in the churchyard at Hope parish church on 8 Mar 1699. No record of a will or administration for him has yet been found.
A second possibility concerning the parentage of John Hallom is that he was the son of Thomas and Alice Hallom, born in 1638 and baptised on 25 Mar 1638. Thomas had earlier lived at Beritstall and went on to live at Outland Head. This John Hallam, Thomas's fourth son, was living in 1666.
This John is not presumed to be the son of Thomas of Outland Head primarily on the evidence that he had a son named Martin - Martin would have been his brother and grandfather if he is the son of George, discussed above.
