*The ancestry of Richard de Vernon who inherited Haddon through his marriage to the co-heiress Avice d'Avenell is not certain. He held the estate of Harlaston in Staffordshire, which before him had been held by one Walter de Vernon, grandson of Walter de Vernon, indicating Richard may have been the son of this younger Walter de Vernon.
At Domesday, Richard de Vernon, Baron of Shipbrook, held 14 manors in Cheshire, and Shropham in Norfolk. A Walter de Vernon, possibly his brother, held 4 manors in Cheshire and 2 in Buckinghamshire. This Walter de Vernon may be the Walter de Vernon who had held Harlaston before his grandson of the same name.
Several published pedigrees agree that Richard de Vernon, Baron of Shipbrook, was the same man as Richard de Reviers, Seigneur de Vernon - but this is highly unlikely. At Domesday, Richard de Reviers is recorded as holding just one manor, that of Mosterton in Dorset. There are several charters proving he married Adelise Peverel, daughter of William Peverel of Nottingham, and that they had at least four sons and one daughter. Among them was Baldwin de Reviers, 1st Earl of Devon. There is no conclusive evidence that any of their children went on to be Baron of Shipbrook.
