Register Report for Andrew Hallom, blacksmith of Castleton, Derbyshire, d. 1591
Generation 1
Andrew Hallom-1 was born before 1550, and probably before 1540, in or near to Castleton in the Hope Valley. He worked in Castleton as a blacksmith, a profession he inherited from his forebears, since there were Hallam blacksmiths in Castleton at least as early as the mid-15th century. He inherited houses and land in Bradwell, probably including at Beristall, and he left these to his wife Joan and his sons in his will of 1591.
Andrew Hallom married Joan before around 1567, and had the following children:
i.
Richard Hallom, probably born before or around 1567.
ii.
George Hallom, probably born around or before 1568. He is likely the George Hallom who lived at Peak Forest, married Margaret and had children Rachel born 1630 and George born 1635. If so, he died in Peak Forest in 1641.
iii.
John Hallom, probably born before 1570. He inherited his father Andrew's blacksmith tools in his will of 1591.
iv.
Martin Hallom-2, probably born around 157o. Described with his brother Robert as Andrew Hallom's "youngest sons". He was a miner and yeoman of Beristall in Bradwell, Derbyshire.
v.
Robert Hallom, probably born a little before 1571. He was described as the youngest son and executor of his father Andrew Hallom in 1591, suggesting he was of age [21 years] by then. He is probably the Robert Hallom who died in 1641 in Castleton.
vi.
A daughter, who married a Wyld [or Wild] and had issue, Mary Wyld [or Wild], living in 1591.
Generation 2
Martin Hallom-2 was born around 1570, probably in Castleton where his father Andrew worked as a blacksmith until his death in 1591. He was left houses and land in Bradwell by his father Andrew should his older brothers fail to have male heirs, and he is known to have lived at Beristall in Bradwell. He was variously described as a yeoman and miner, and is mentioned in numerous deeds relating to the sale of land in the Bradwell area. He died in Aug 1630 and was buried at Hope parish church on 25 Aug 1630.
Martin Hallom married Mary Marshall, sister of Clement Marshall of Abney. The had the following children:
i.
George Hallom-3 was probably their eldest son, born a little before 1600 (or else his baptism would likely feature in the records of Hope parish church). He appears to have inherited land from his father which the latter had purchased from Robert Hall and his wife Grace in 1623.
ii.
Robert Hallom was born in 1607 in Bradwell, Derbyshire and baptised at Hope parish church on 26 Oct 1607.
iii.
Rauf Hallom was born around 1609 in Bradwell, Derbyshire.
iv.

Generation 3
1.
George Hallom-3 was born before about 1600 in Derbyshire. He lived in Beristall, Bradwell, Derbyshire in 1640. He probably died between 1645 and 1666, during the gap in parish register records of Hope parish church. It is possible that he is the George Hallam who died at Peak Forest in 1641, but this George had a child baptised at Chapel-en-le-Frith on 3 Oct 1630, and on 12 Oct 1630 there is a record of a George Hallam listed as a blacksmith of Hope, indicating two separate contemporary George Hallams. He is likely to be the George Hallom, yeoman of Bradwell and smith of Hope, who sold a messuage and land to Thomas Eyre of Hassop in 1635 for just over £66. He is probably the son of Martin Hallom, as he is mentioned as a complainant in a case against Robert Hall and his wife Grace concerning land in Castleton in 1632; Martin Hallam had purchased land from Robert Hall and his wife Grace in 1623, and the date of 1632 (the date of the administration of Martin Hallam's estate) hints at George inheriting the land. Further evidence for this suggestion is that George's eldest son was named Martin.
George Hallom and an unknown spouse had the following children:
2.
i.
Martin Hallom was born in 1628 in Bradwell, Derbyshire.
ii.
Margaret Hallom. She died in 1629 in Bradwell, Derbyshire.
