The Progenitors of the Hallams of Bradwell, Derbyshire
The earliest reference I have found to a Hallam is an indirect reference to Adam de Hallam, senior, whose son Adam de Hallam is described as 'junior' in 1330. He is mentioned with his son Thomas in a grant of 1330. Roger de Hallum (fl. 1337-8) and John de Hallum (fl. 1343) are contemporary with Adam de Hallum junior and his son Thomas. All are mentioned in grants and charters relating to property in Hallamshire.
I believe that John de Hallom of Bamford near Hathersage, mentioned in a quitclaim of 1381, is likely an ancestor of all the Hallams that lived in the Hope Valley thereafter, or else certainly a member of the same family.
This would make John, Richard and Martin Hallom who lived in the region in the 1470s his descendants - perhaps brothers or else cousins of each other.
John Hallom, smith of Hope in 1505, continued in the profession of, and was also named for, his forefathers.
In the mid 16th century there is a will made by Humfry Hallam of Hathersage, but records about other Hallams in the Hope area during this period are scarce.
Andrew Hallom (died 1591) and Richard Hallam (died 1599) also continued in the profession of their ancestors, working as smiths in Castleton. They both left wills.
By the start of the parish register of Hope in 1598-9, there were several adult Hallams living in the parish and having children.
The chart below outlines the known Hallams living in the area from the 14th century to the start of the 17th century.
