Valentine Hallom of Cowlow Farm, Dove Holes, Derbyshire, c1705-1768
Valentine Hallom was born at Cowlow Farm in Dove Holes in around 1705. The exact date of his birth cannot be ascertained, since he was most likely baptised at the nearby church at Peak Forest, and records for this period do not survive intact. His father Ellis Hallom and mother Ann nee Clowes had married in 1699 in Hope, and moved to Dove Holes a few years before Valentine's birth.
Valentine followed in his father's footsteps as a farmer, and after his marriage to Dorothy Kyrke of Shireoaks near Chinley, a descendant of the ancient Kyrkes of Whitehough, he farmed at the family farmstead, Cowlow Farm. Valentine and Dorothy married on 30 Oct 1725 at St Thomas Becket church, Chapel-en-le-Frith.
Valentine and Dorothy had four children between 1730 and 1744: Isaac, Grace, George and Mary. During this period Valentine's residence is listed as Bowden Edge and Cowlow, Cowlow being in what was then the township of Bowden Edge. Dorothy died at the age of 46 in 1747 at Bowden Edge, leaving Valentine a widower with four children between the ages of 3 and 17 years old.
The following year Valentine married for the second time. He married Ann Garlick at Peak Forest on 7 Feb 1748. Valentine and Ann went on to have two children, Ellen and Martha, who were both born at Cowlow Farm.
Valentine died in 1768 at Cowlow Farm and was buried in the churchyard of St Thomas Becket, Chapel-en-le-Frith, on 16 June 1768.
